Careers
We build guidance for people who are lost, tired, and trying to find room 247. Pilot deployments are running and more partners are waiting.
Why join
We are a small team making journeys navigable in places where people get lost every day: hospitals, stations, campuses, airports, malls. The map layer runs in production, the journey layer is being built into the pilots, and more partners are waiting than we can currently serve.
We look for people who want to build something that works. You should care about the experience of a person who is lost, tired, and just trying to find room 247.
Credentials matter less than what you have built. If you can show it, that is enough.
We work best with people who are autonomous, open, and good at solving problems. Say something when you are stuck. Share your work early. Work out what you do not know, then go and find out.
Most roles benefit from hands-on technical skill, design included. If you have several of the skills listed across these roles, you are especially welcome.
Founding engineer
Build the core platform: routing algorithms, map rendering, the frontend, and the backend that ties it together. You will own large parts of the system and decide how they are built.
What you will do:
- Design and build the mapping platform
- Write routing that handles stairs, lifts, and accessibility needs
- Build the interfaces visitors use to navigate
- Work directly with pilot partners on their buildings and their problems
- Decide what to build next and what to cut
What we look for:
- Experience shipping software people actually use
- Willingness to work across the full stack
- Comfort with ambiguity, since the product is being built as we speak
- Ability to make decisions with incomplete information
- You fix what is broken without waiting for permission
This is a founding role. You will shape the product, the codebase, and how we build from here.
Journey planning engineer
Build the layer that orders a day and re-orders it when something slips. This is the part of the product a map cannot do, and it is the reason the pilots exist.
What you will do:
- Model journeys as steps with durations, dependencies, and owners
- Build scheduling and re-planning that holds up when a step runs late
- Turn queue data into estimates and departure times
- Design the checks that catch a plan that cannot work
- Test plans against real hospital days, not clean ones
What we look for:
- Experience with scheduling, routing, constraint solving, or operations research
- Comfort with graph algorithms and time-based modelling
- Ability to reason about uncertain durations and produce honest estimates
- Interest in how people behave inside a plan when it changes
Geospatial engineer
Work with maps, floor plans, and spatial data. Build the pipeline that turns CAD files and blueprints into routable maps people can actually navigate.
What you will do:
- Process floor plans into map data: coordinates, paths, connections
- Build tools for venue teams to maintain and update their maps
- Work on spatial indexing, map matching, and routing graph generation
- Define how we represent spaces across buildings of all types
What we look for:
- Experience with GIS, spatial data, or mapping
- Familiarity with coordinate systems, map projections, and geodetic concepts
- Proficiency with Python or similar for data processing
- Experience with tools like QGIS, PostGIS, or OpenStreetMap data
We will train you on our specific pipeline and tooling.
Positioning engineer
Make positioning work without expensive hardware. Use WiFi, Bluetooth, accelerometers, magnetic fields, and any signal available to work out where someone is inside a building.
What you will do:
- Build sensor fusion systems that combine signals into a position estimate
- Run experiments to test new positioning approaches
- Collect and analyse signal data from real buildings
- Improve accuracy in challenging environments
What we look for:
- Strong background in signal processing, physics, or statistical inference
- Experience with sensor data (IMU, BLE, WiFi, magnetometer)
- Comfort with probability, filtering (Kalman, particle), and estimation theory
- Willingness to run experiments and iterate on real measurements
Research engineer
Explore approaches that do not have clear answers yet. Read papers, run experiments, and ship what works.
What you will do:
- Investigate positioning and mapping techniques from the literature
- Build prototypes to test ideas in real buildings
- Measure what works and what does not
- Publish findings as part of our case studies
What we look for:
- Background in a relevant field (computer science, robotics, electrical engineering, physics)
- Experience running structured experiments
- Ability to turn research into working prototypes
- Comfort with uncertainty, since most ideas will not work and that is the point
Backend engineer
Build the services that power maps, routing, and live guidance for every venue we support.
What you will do:
- Design and build APIs for map data, routing, and positioning
- Scale services to handle more venues and more people
- Build tooling for data ingestion and map updates
- Keep deployments reliable and fast
What we look for:
- Experience building and running backend services in production
- Strong understanding of databases, APIs, and system design
- Comfort with TypeScript, Go, or similar
- A pragmatic approach to scale: build for what we need now
Designer, UI and UX
Design the interface someone sees when they are lost in a building. Make it obvious, fast, and easy to ignore when it is working.
What you will do:
- Design the map interface, directions, and search for mobile and web
- Work on the console venue teams use to run their spaces
- Run tests with real visitors to find what confuses them
- Define the visual language across products
What we look for:
- Portfolio showing shipped work in apps, maps, or wayfinding
- Understanding of typography, layout, and interaction design
- Comfort prototyping and iterating on user feedback
- Interest in how people move through physical spaces
Native mobile engineer
Build the iOS and Android apps that bring guidance offline and into the pocket: offline maps, notifications, and deeper sensor integration.
What you will do:
- Build and maintain native iOS and Android applications
- Integrate with the routing and map backend
- Work on offline map rendering and navigation
- Use platform sensors (Bluetooth, WiFi, accelerometer) to improve positioning
What we look for:
- Experience shipping at least one native mobile app (Swift, Kotlin, or both)
- Understanding of mobile performance and battery constraints
- Comfort working across platform boundaries
- Judgment about trading features against ship dates
Flutter engineer
Build cross-platform map interfaces from a single codebase. Own the visitor-facing mobile experience.
What you will do:
- Build interactive map components in Flutter
- Render turn-by-turn directions on mobile
- Integrate with the routing API and map tile backend
- Handle offline mode, accessibility, and performance on low-end devices
What we look for:
- Experience shipping a Flutter app to production
- Strong Dart skills and understanding of the Flutter rendering pipeline
- Willingness to drop into native platform code when needed
- Attention to performance across a range of devices
Other roles
We are also open to people who want to work on business development, marketing, sales, or operations. If you can help get guided journeys into more venues, we want to hear from you.
Advisors and part-time
We are open to advisors, consultants, and people who want to offer guidance or feedback. If you have experience with hospitals, stations, indoor spaces, mapping, sensors, or navigation, we would welcome your input. Send us a note either way.
How to apply
Email contact@newmap.tech with what you have built and why this problem interests you. A cover letter is optional. We read what you send and reply within a week.
